Vermont Orthoptera Species Profiles

Species profiles present essential details about Vermont grasshoppers, crickets and katydids: their phenology, the habitats they prefer, and maps to where you might find them.

The table below links to profiles of 81 grasshopper, cricket and katydid (Orthoptera) species found in Vermont. Each profile begins with a short description of the species’ distribution and preferred habitat. We list conservation status (A key to state conservation status codes can be found here.), phenology (based on the annual first and last confirmed occurrences for the species in the state), and links to additional information. Information in these species accounts relied on iNaturalist, BugGuide.net, NatureServe Explorer, Songs of Insects and other sources.

The distribution map for each species shows ad hoc collecting locations beginning in ~1960 by Ross and Joyce Bell, and by other that reported to them to the Bells. Locations of specimens were georeferenced by the authors on paper maps for each species using township borders as a reference when placing a location. Points from each of these species maps were digitized in a GIS by VCE volunteer Susan Gallagher and Kent McFarland. Additional data comes from the Vermont Atlas of Life on iNaturalist, and other records from the Global Biodiversity Information Infrastructure. These records are updated quarterly from GBIF.
