This spring species is moderately common and widespread in VT.

Identification: This is one of the few species that might be recognizable from photographs. Sphecodes ranunculi is one of two species in Vermont with distinctive antenna proportions (F1 very short, F2 long) and enlarged femurs on the middle legs that are occasionally visible in photos. Additionally, males are active in early to mid-spring which may be unique in VT Sphecodes.
Similar Species: Sphecodes aroniae are very similar, though have even more enlarged mid-femurs.
