This is a distinctive, relatively common spring bee. Found statewide, it is perhaps most common on understory shrubs in and around forest clearings.
Identification: The orange hairs on T1 and T2 are distinctive for both males and females.
Similar Species: Dunning’s Mining Bee (Andrena dunningi) often has similar colored hairs on the thorax, but never on the abdomen. Clark’s Mining Bee (Andrena clarkella) has pale orange/yellow hairs on T1 but not T2 and is almost always associated with Willows.
