Welcome to the most comprehensive assessment of Vermont Odonata ever assembled. The Vermont Damselfly and Dragonfly Atlas is also a living survey, growing every year with new discoveries and updated distribution maps.
The Atlas features 146 confirmed Odonata species in Vermont — 101 dragonflies (Anisoptera) and 45 damselflies (Zygoptera). You can find photos, distribution maps, flight periods, conservation status and other data in the Species Profiles section.
We also welcome your contributions. Compiled in this atlas are data from 1891 through 2017. Although Vermont ranks relatively high in Odonata diversity among northern states, we’re convinced that additional species remain to be discovered. You’ll find those and rarely encountered species on our Most Wanted list.
Finally, in this project every dragonfly counts, even common species. We continue to grow our dataset with contributions from skilled odonatologists and casual observers alike. We cannot properly assess trends in Vermont’s odonate fauna without more data. So please join the project and report what you find. Thanks.
