Scattered is the best way to describe its distribution. Seems to prefer bogs, swamps and ponds and is occasionally the most abundant species among Aeshna swarms.
True to its common name, it does indeed have an all-black tenth abdominal segment; yet its scientific name refers to the ventral tubercle on each of the male’s cerci.
