Have seen at least twice previously. Don Clark spotted the bird and is very familiar with this species.

Description of Habitat

Marshy cove of Connecticut River.

Verbal Narrative & Description of Observation

The bird was observed among apporx 30 Anas carolinensis. It was not feeding or sleeping. It was clearly distinguishable by the horizontal bar.

Relative Size & Shape

A small (approx 14") paddling duck.

Head

Chestnut head with dark green marking from eye along side of head and neck.

Feet & Bill

Small dark bill

Wings

Horizontal bar at top edge of wing.

Breast, Belly, Flanks, Under Tail Coverts

Cream under tail coverts

IMPORTANT: What similar species were eliminated when making the identification and how was this bird different?

Anas carolinensis and intergrade were eliminated due to the lack of a vertical white bar on side.
