Welcome to the most comprehensive assessment of Vermont Orthoptera ever assembled. The Vermont Orthoptera (Grasshoppers, Crickets, Katydids) Atlas is also a living survey, growing every year with new discoveries and updated distribution maps.
The Atlas covers more than 90 confirmed Orthoptera species in Vermont. You can find occurrence records, photos, distribution maps, phenology, conservation status and other information here.

There is much to learn about the conservation status of these insects. The draft 2025 Vermont Wildlife Action Plan recommends two species be considerd as Species of Greatest Conservation Need: Smith’s Spur-throat Grasshopper (Melanoplus mancus) and Sand Locust (Psinidia fenestralis). A third species, Dawson’s Spur-throat Grasshopper (Melanoplus dawsoni), is recommended as a Watchlist species.
We welcome your contributions. Every sighting counts, even common species. We continue to grow this atlas with contributions from skilled entomologists and casual observers alike. We cannot properly assess the conservation status of Vermont’s Orthoptera without more data. So please join iNaturalist Vermont and report your sightings!
