Description of Habitat

small, grass yard surrounded by a witch-hazel and rhododendrons with trees beyond that (hemlock, maple, ash, etc.)

Behaviors Observed

feeding at platform feeder and then perched in shrubs

Description of Vocalizations

none

Verbal Narrative & Description of Observation

The bird, a female, was first seen when it flew into our platform feeder where a House Finch and a couple Black-capped Chickadees were feeding.

Relative Size & Shape

larger than the House Finch and smaller than the Blue Jay that had been at the feeder just previously

Head

crown brown with a white stripe , thick white supercilium , cheek slightly lighter brown than crown and faintly edged with a darker brown, malar white, eye dark

Feet & Bill

bill heavy and pinkish; did not see feet well

Upper Back

brown, faintly dappled

Lower Back & Rump

brown, faintly dappled

Wings

brown with some white flecks

Breast, Belly, Flanks, Under Tail Coverts

creamy white with brown streaks on upper breast and down sides

Tail

brown, unmarked

IMPORTANT: What similar species were eliminated when making the identification and how was this bird different?

female Purple Finch; the Rose-breasted Grosbeak is larger and the facial pattern whiter and more pronounced than a Purple Finch, bill heavier and pinker in color; Black-headed Grosbeak, which would have been much rare for this area, and would have a a buffier breast with finer or no streaks
