Description of Habitat

On Lake. Other species nearby: Redhead, Lesser Scaup, Greater Scaup, Mallard, Bufflehead, American Black Duck.

Behaviors Observed

Just floating.

Description of Vocalizations

No Vocalizations

Verbal Narrative & Description of Observation

Did not observe in field. Noticed the Ruddy Duck when reviewing photos.

Relative Size & Shape

Similar in size to Bufflehead.

Head

Brown head and face with dirty white cheeks.

Feet & Bill

Small chunky blueish gray bill. Did not see feet.

Upper Back

Same brown color as the rest of the bird.

Lower Back & Rump

Same brown color as the rest of the bird.

Wings

Same brown color as the rest of the bird

Breast, Belly, Flanks, Under Tail Coverts

All brown.

Tail

Did not see.

IMPORTANT: What similar species were eliminated when making the identification and how was this bird different?

Female Bufflehead was eliminated by the lack of white spots on head, long neck, and shorter beak.
