Verbal Narrative & Description of Observation

We walked to Birchgrove Bakery and saw this hawk flying above. We had previously, on the same walk, seen a Red-tailed Hawk (borealis), the common subspecies in Vermont. We immediately noticed that this bird had a much blotchier chest, and lacked a clear supercilium and throat patch. We shared our thoughts verbally and I wrote them down, and then we got coffee.

Relative Size & Shape

Hawk size, no ssp. differences noted.

Head

Full brown throat, no clear supersilium.

Feet & Bill

Not noted.

Upper Back

Not seen.

Lower Back & Rump

Not seen.

Breast, Belly, Flanks, Under Tail Coverts

Dark messy belly band, especially at sides.

Tail

Red. Adult.

IMPORTANT: What similar species were eliminated when making the identification and how was this bird different?

No other species were considered. borealis subspecies was eliminated due to lack of white throat patch and due to lack of a clear, modest breast band.
