seen once or twice a year during fall migration, observed in corn fields.

Description of Habitat

seen in flight, flying very low right over me, over allen rd. it must have been coming down to land in the field right next the road which is quite large.

Behaviors Observed

Large bird, stiff wing beats, mostly dull grey from below. Long legs extended, trailing behind bulky body. Neck extended forward, long, straight.

Description of Vocalizations

Bird did not vocalize during observation.

Verbal Narrative & Description of Observation

i was heading from Rt. 7 to Spear st. on allen rd in south burlington. Then from my left came this Crane into view. Flying very low coming straight across my path, flying very low. I stopped to see if I could hear any vocalizations, nothing. Large bird, stiff wing beats, mostly dull grey from below. Long legs extended, trailing behind bulky body. Neck extended forward, long, straight.

Relative Size & Shape

about 3ft in length with legs trailing beyond body. very large wingspan.

Head

Bird had a long straight neck position in flight to head and tapered long bill. All grey, darker bill

Feet & Bill

Dark, long legs and feet.
Bill was long dark grey, tapered to point.

large wingspan. bulky heavy wings. mostly grey from below.

Breast, Belly, Flanks, Under Tail Coverts

mostly grey from my visual.

Tail

Tail shape ended blunt , straight with legs continuing past.

IMPORTANT: What similar species were eliminated when making the identification and how was this bird different?

Great blue heron, smaller all around, leg color, and neck coiled during flight. Not it.
Egrets, coloration, legs, bill, and overall size. Not it.
