Verbal Narrative & Description of Observation

Medium sized woodpecker flew across in front of me while driving north on VT Rte. 12. Bird had large white patches on wings and bright red head, both features highly visible.
It landed on the side of a dead tree beside the road and I stopped and observed for a few minutes with binoculars before it flew deeper into a wooded area.

Relative Size & Shape

Larger than a Robin, distinctive woodpecker shape and flight.

Head

Bright red head

Upper Back

Black

Lower Back & Rump

Black tipped tail

Wings

Large white patches on wings. These caught my attention immediately.

Breast, Belly, Flanks, Under Tail Coverts

White under belly

IMPORTANT: What similar species were eliminated when making the identification and how was this bird different?

Pileated woodpecker, too small and red head was a big identifying factor. It was too distinctive in size and coloration from all other native Woodpeckers.
