Description of Habitat

Seasonally wet and muddy. A slow creek, hills and mountains. Spruce, fir, birch trees, some larch, many snags, and dying trees.
Understory red dogwood and pussy willows and grass. powerlines and snow mobile path going through the forest up hill. Pileated woodpeckers present.

Behaviors Observed

No visual observations i only hear them singing at night

Description of Vocalizations

A rising hooting trill starting with lower sounding notes and ending on a higher note

Verbal Narrative & Description of Observation

I hear 1 bird singing all night starting at dark around 8pm till 3am the same song, and have not heard it sing any other song. So it has a limited repertoire.

IMPORTANT: What similar species were eliminated when making the identification and how was this bird different?

Eastern screech owl, i have not heard any whinnies or trills that sound like a screech owl.

Northern saw whet owl has a too too too song which is different from the trill i am hearing.

Other Notes & Comments

I heard this bird last year too and i thought it was a a screech owl.
This year i hear 2 birds. The second bird does not sing that often. i did capture the 2nd bird singing it's on the audio clipbi sent you.
