Description of Habitat

Open water channel between marsh areas

Behaviors Observed

Feeding and swimming with Canada Geese

Verbal Narrative & Description of Observation

Medium sized goose (slightly smaller than Canada Goose) swimming in a channel of water with Canada Geese. The bird had all brown head with black and pink bill. The neck appeared to have furls. Brown back and sides with a thin white line on the flanks and lines in the back from the tips of the feathers. The bird did climb onto a small mound to preen where I could see the pink legs and feet.

Relative Size & Shape

Slightly smaller than Canada Geese

Head

Head all brown. Dark eye.

Feet & Bill

Feet and legs bright pink. These were well seen when it climbed onto a small mound to preen. Bill was black (tip and base) and pink.

Upper Back

Grayish brown with white lines from the ends of the feathers

Breast, Belly, Flanks, Under Tail Coverts

Buffy breast, brown flanks. White under tail coverts

IMPORTANT: What similar species were eliminated when making the identification and how was this bird different?

Greater White-fronted Goose has white at base of bill and orange legs and bill.
Graylag Goose has orange bill.
Tiaga Bean-Goose and Tundra Bean Goose have orange legs/feet and orange in bill
