I have seen Brown Boobies for 10 years in Costa Rica on the Northwest coast.

Description of Habitat

Small Lake, island in the center, woods on west side,

Behaviors Observed

Unconcerned of my presence as I was standing on the beach looking out over the water.
The Booby was circling the small island, flying up and down both sides of the lake and diving right in front of me several times. Never saw a fish in its mouth.

Verbal Narrative & Description of Observation

Making very large, noisy plunges when fishing. would dive several times in a row. Then would circle the inner island and return to same spot and dive again. The bird remained at Emerald lake for 5 days and during those days I saw the bird resting, sleeping in a tree on the little island, always near water's edge.

Relative Size & Shape

Very wide wing span, head and neck protruding, yellow feet visible

Crown, throat, and nape dark brown, yellowish/whitish bill, bluish light color skin around eye giving appearance of a small patch.

Feet & Bill

Long, thick pointed bill yellowish in color

IMPORTANT: What similar species were eliminated when making the identification and how was this bird different?

This bird crashed into the water head first when fishing so I immediately eliminated Osprey or EAgle.
The moment it surfaced I saw the long yellowish beak, brown body, yellow legs, white belly when it flew off.

I could not determine the sex
