In a small bush next to a feeder, visiting feeder. With House sparrows. Yard.

Behaviors Observed

Feeding at a bird feeder, hiding in bush.

Description of Vocalizations

None heard. I can't hear their chips very well.

Verbal Narrative & Description of Observation

I noted some House Sparrows in a bush and visiting a feeder, and so walked closer in order to see if there was anything else and to count them. I saw one bird which I thought was an American Tree Sparrow, but then I noticed that it was smaller, with a dark eye-line and without the grey I would expect on the cap. The breast was also pale. I then remembered that a CHSP had been seen here, before (I get alerts), and I summarily identified this as one.

Relative Size & Shape

Small passer.

Head

Dark eye line. Red cap. Cute little bill.

Feet & Bill

Not noted especially.

Upper Back

More brightly colored than a SOSP.

Breast, Belly, Flanks, Under Tail Coverts

Pale breast without central dot.

IMPORTANT: What similar species were eliminated when making the identification and how was this bird different?

ATSP was eliminated by dark eyeline that wasn't red (to my poor eyes), lack of central black dot in breast, and small size. Other passerines not considered relevant.
