Description of Habitat

Dogwood shrub with tall ash trees alongside a cattail marsh.

Behaviors Observed

Foraging in bushes.

Description of Vocalizations

None.

Verbal Narrative & Description of Observation

A few minutes after "pishing" a flock of chickadees and sparrows I spotted another bird moving in some bare bushes at eye height thirty feet away from me. I got my binoculars on it and immediately identified it as a Wilson's Warbler. After that I watched it for about a minute as it moved through the bushes as close as 20 feet from me, and then went out of sight.

Relative Size & Shape

Small warbler-shaped passerine.

Head

Black crown, yellow cheeks, eye, throat and nape.

Feet & Bill

Black, sharply pointed bill. Pink legs.

Upper Back

Greenish yellow.

Lower Back & Rump

Greenish yellow.

Wings

Greenish yellow, otherwise unmarked.

Breast, Belly, Flanks, Under Tail Coverts

All bright yellow.

Tail

Greenish yellow.

IMPORTANT: What similar species were eliminated when making the identification and how was this bird different?

Black cap rules out yellow warbler.

Black bill, greenish yellow wings, yellow undertail coverts, and overall shape rule out American Goldfinch.

Appeared to be an adult male.
