Observer’s Previous Acquaintance With This or Similar Species

I have seen Hooded Warbler many times in Geprag's Community Park in Hinesburg, as well as other locations.

I certify that any attachments included with this report were captured during this observation event.
Description of Habitat

Dense vegetation along tree line next to a power line cut.

Behaviors Observed

I only had one quick look. It quickly disappeared and I never saw it again.

Description of Vocalizations

I heard it a total of 8 times and each time it sang ta-whit, ta-whit, ta-whit-tee-yo. I could not get a recording because it was not singing consistently. I also did not have time for a photo.

Verbal Narrative & Description of Observation

I heard a different bird along the tree line and looked toward the direction of that sound with my bins. While searching for that bird another bird popped up from the underbrush, right where I was looking. I ID'd it very quickly as a Hooded Warbler and remember saying aloud, "What are you doing here?" It was a very nice and unexpected surprise.

Relative Size & Shape

About the same size and shape as a Canada Warbler.

Head

I saw a black hood surrounding a yellow face with a dark eye.

Feet & Bill

The bill was dark and I did not see the feet or legs.

Upper Back

The upper back was olive colored.

Lower Back & Rump

I did not see the lower back or rump.

Wings

I also did not see the wings.

Breast, Belly, Flanks, Under Tail Coverts

I did see the breast and it was yellow. I did not see the belly, flanks or under tail.

Tail

I did not see the tail.

IMPORTANT: What similar species were eliminated when making the identification and how was this bird different?

The closest looking warbler to rule out would be Golden-cheeked Warbler because it also has a black hood surrounding a yellow face. However, it does not have any yellow on its' breast and it has a black eye-line which this Hooded Warbler did not.

Other Notes & Comments

It was an adult male due to the black hood.
