Between 2001 and 2009 extensive birding in Vermont and Eastern NY. Many sightings. Could ID by song. Was out of the USA fall of 2009 to spring of 2017. Now back settled in Vermont...

Description of Habitat

Somewhat urban. next to asphalt paved driveway in casually landscaped area. Ivy ground cover with Rhododendron and cedar above. Northeast corner of building, so in the shade of the home. Had spotted Black Capped Chickadees and American Robins nearby. Not apparently immediately associated with other birds.

Behaviors Observed

Foraging on the ground next to a driveway. Observed it pick up and eat something white (snail shell?) Then crossing to sit in a cedar tree about 2' off the ground.

Description of Vocalizations

None heard

Verbal Narrative & Description of Observation

Unobstructed view of sparrow sized bird: pink legs and bill, white eye ring, olive green primaries, secondaries and back, crown: orange and dark brown stripes. Chest white with dark stripes fading to white belly. Plumage looked as though perfect breeding condition. Foraging (perky) on the ground in the ivy, below rhododendron next to NE corner of main house. Then moved to a branch on cedar to the north of the driveway 5’ east of basketball hoop, about 2’ from ground. Using Carson 3D 8x42 Binoculars at about 30 feet through window from 2nd floor (so, looking down, about 20 degrees below horizontal) of apartment over garage at 296 South Cove Road, Burlington. Viewed with Lara and Isobel Calfee. Confirmed with Sibly’s Birds East book and Merlin application while still watching the bird. Bird sat in cedar until scared by landlord’s mother walking in the driveway.

Breast white with brown flecks or bars... becomeing less numerous toward the belly which was white.

Vireos: This bird- white eye ring, pink legs and bill. warbler bill. on the ground
Northern Waterthrush. definitely no white eyebrow stripe. This bird- white eye ring Very white belly and chest (other than spots)
Thrushes. Too small to be a thrush.
