Observer’s Previous Acquaintance With This or Similar Species

Approached to within 10' of flocks searching roadside gravel in Maine. Always seen previously in winter.

Description of Habitat

Elm tree alongside road with steep banking. With female Rose-Breasted Grosbeak.

Behaviors Observed

Searching among leaves for food. Unafraid of observers. Eventually flew off with RBGR.

Description of Vocalizations

Short, clear call. Only once, which caught my attention because I had never heard it before. Then silent.

Verbal Narrative & Description of Observation

Bird was climbing through the branches searching for food the whole time. Easily observed at 45-60 degree angles. Great light.

Relative Size & Shape

Similar to RBGR but longer.

Rose/wine with dark eye.

Feet & Bill

Finch bill

Upper Back

Wings

Dark with one white wing patch observed

Breast, Belly, Flanks, Under Tail Coverts

Rose/wine through breast, then solid gray back to the tail.

Tail

Longish, dark top and bottom.

IMPORTANT: What similar species were eliminated when making the identification and how was this bird different?

House Finch, Purple Finch. White Winged Crossbill. Bird was larger, longer, much more color, and far different call.
